A carbon offset service that can make your Antarctic holiday carbon neutral.
With Penguin Offset, you can calulate your share of the CO2 greenhouse emissions from the
planes & ships in your Antarctic holiday and then offset these emissions so that your
trip to Antarctic is carbon neutral.

Antarctic tourism carbon calulator

The Penguin antarctic tourism carbon calculator has two parts. One part is for estimating the CO2 emissions from air travel, and the other part calculates CO2 emissions from Antarctic cruise ship.

Air Travel Calculator

Penguin Offset uses an industry standard methodology for estimation of air travel emissions. This model considers the destination and arrival points of the trip, calculates the Great Circle route distance between these two points, allocates the trip into one of three length classes each of which has CO2 per kilometre assigned to it.

Cruise Ship Carbon Calculator

Penguin Offset's cruise ship carbon calculator is based on scientific assessment of the carbon footprint of Antarctic tourism by international researchers. This research has led to the development of a simple and effective carbon audit methodology for cruise ships in the Antarctic.

Penguin Offset have used this research to make these calcuations available to the public and to form the basis of a carbon offset transaction to make the Antractic trip carbon neutral. The Antarctic cruise carbon calculator uses a variety of data inputs including:

  • The size of the ship (GWT)
  • The number of passengers on the ship
  • The duration of the trip
  • The relative fuel consumption and amount of time steaming
  • The relative fuel consumption and amount of time in hotel mode
  • The carbon coefficient of the fuels used

Some of this data is provided by the client when they seek a quote from Penguin Offset. The rest of the data is provided by our database.

Using this database, an assessement has been made of the carbon footprint of the Antarctic cruise fleet. The table below shows tonnes CO2e per passenger for a hypothetical 14 day cruise. As can be seen, it ranges from about 6.5 to 2 tonnes CO2e per person per trip. This number is for demonstration purposes only and excludes the emissions from the air travel component of the trip and emissions from other activities such as transfers.

The table shows the per-person carbon emissions from Antarctic cruise ships, measured in tonnes CO2e for a two week cruise, assuming 100% occupancy.

The carbon audit and carbon offset process can be undertaken before, during or after the cruise. Contact Penguin Offset today for a quote to make your Antarctic trip carbon neutral.
